The short answer
A Followers only account is someone who follows you while you do not follow them back in the Instagram data you are looking at.
They → follow you.
You → do not follow them.
Social Janitor uses “Followers only” as a simple label for this one-way relationship so it is easy to separate from mutual connections and accounts you follow without a follow-back.
02
Followers only vs Following only
The two categories describe opposite one-way relationships.
- Followers only: they follow you, but you do not follow them.
- Following only: you follow them, but they do not follow you.
- Mutual: you follow each other.

03
How the Followers only list is calculated
The list is created by comparing the accounts in your Followers data with the accounts in your Following data.
Followers − Following = Followers only.
If an account appears in Followers but not in Following, it belongs to Followers only. If it appears in both, it is Mutual.
This is based on the actual account records in the export, not on comparing the two headline totals.
04
A simple example
Imagine your export contains:
- Followers: Alex, Jamie, Morgan, Casey
- Following: Jamie, Morgan, Taylor
Comparing the lists gives you:
- Followers only: Alex, Casey
- Mutual: Jamie, Morgan
- Following only: Taylor
The same comparison works with hundreds or thousands of accounts; the only difference is that doing it manually becomes much less convenient.

How should you review a Followers only list?
This list can be useful for spotting accounts you may want to follow back, but it should not be treated as a to-do list. You may not want to follow every person who follows you.
- Review accounts you recognize but may have missed.
- Check the Instagram profile before deciding whether to follow.
- Keep business, creator or personal boundaries that make sense for your account.
- Treat the list as relationship information, not as an obligation to follow back.
Social Janitor does not automatically follow accounts for you. Any follow action happens on Instagram and remains your decision.
