How to See Who Doesn’t Follow You Back on Instagram

The most reliable way to check who you follow that does not follow you back is to compare your own Instagram followers and following data. Social Janitor turns that export into a clear Following only list without asking for your Instagram password.

01

The short answer

To see who does not follow you back on Instagram, compare the accounts in your Following list with the accounts in your Followers list. Any account that appears in Following but not in Followers is a one-way connection: you follow them, but they do not follow you back.

The useful formula

Following − Followers = accounts you follow that do not follow you back.

You can compare the lists manually, but that becomes tedious once you follow more than a small number of accounts. Social Janitor performs the comparison from your Instagram export and presents the result as a searchable Following only list.

02

What “doesn’t follow you back” actually means

An account that does not follow you back is not necessarily someone who recently unfollowed you. It only describes the relationship in the data you are looking at now.

Social Janitor separates Instagram relationships into three simple groups:

  • Following only: you follow the account, but the account does not follow you.
  • Followers only: the account follows you, but you do not follow it.
  • Mutual: you follow each other.

This distinction matters because a current one-way relationship cannot tell you whether the other account used to follow you.

03

How to check using your Instagram data export

Instagram lets you request a copy of your account data. For this type of comparison, you need the followers and following data from that export. Social Janitor is designed to read the relevant JSON files directly in your browser.

  1. Request your Instagram data and include your followers and following information.
  2. Download the export when Instagram makes it available.
  3. Open the relevant JSON files in Social Janitor.
  4. Review the generated Following only, Followers only and Mutual lists.

The result reflects the export you imported. It is a snapshot, not a live connection to your Instagram account.

04

How Social Janitor makes the comparison easier

A raw Instagram export is useful, but it is not designed to be a convenient review interface. Social Janitor takes the follower and following records in your export and turns them into relationship lists you can work through.

With the free preview, you can import your data and see what the export contains before deciding whether you need the complete result. Pro unlocks the full one-way relationship lists, search, profile links, review markers, snapshot comparisons and CSV export.

05

Someone who does not follow back is not automatically an unfollower

This is one of the most important distinctions to understand. A current export can show that an account does not follow you now, but it cannot prove that the account followed you previously.

To identify a follower relationship that disappeared, you need two exports from the same Instagram profile taken at different times. Social Janitor can save snapshots and compare them so you can see which follower relationships appeared or disappeared between those points in time.

Even then, the data shows that a relationship changed. It does not tell you why the person stopped following you or the exact moment it happened between the two exports.

06

Why use your own export instead of giving a tool your password?

Social Janitor is built around Instagram's exported data rather than an Instagram login. You request the export yourself, then the selected follower files are read locally in your browser.

Social Janitor does not need your Instagram password to compare the lists, and importing the follower files does not require connecting your Instagram account to the service.

You can read more about the separation between imported Instagram data, account information and billing on our Data & Privacy page.

07

What to do with the list

A Following only list is information, not an instruction to unfollow everyone on it. Some one-way connections are completely intentional: creators, businesses, public accounts, friends or accounts you simply want to keep following.

The useful part is having a clear list you can review at your own pace. Social Janitor lets you search accounts, mark them as Keep or Reviewed and open Instagram profile links when you want to make a decision yourself.
