Followers vs Following on Instagram: Who Doesn’t Follow You Back?

Followers are accounts that follow you. Following are accounts you follow. But when people compare the two lists, the useful question is usually this: who is in your Following list but not your Followers list? Those are the accounts you follow that do not follow you back in that snapshot.

01

Followers vs Following: the short answer

On Instagram, Followers are accounts that follow your profile. Following are accounts your profile follows.

The useful comparison

Followers → they follow you.
Following → you follow them.
Following but not Followers → you follow them, but they do not follow you back.

The two lists overlap when the relationship is mutual. If an account appears on only one side, the relationship is one-way. That overlap is why comparing Followers and Following tells you much more than simply looking at the two numbers on your profile.

02

What comparing Followers and Following actually reveals

When you compare the usernames in both lists, every relationship falls into one of three useful groups:

  • Mutual: the account appears in both Followers and Following. You follow each other.
  • Following only: the account appears in Following but not Followers. You follow them, but they do not follow you back.
  • Followers only: the account appears in Followers but not Following. They follow you, but you do not follow them.
In set terms

Following ∩ Followers = Mutual
Following − Followers = Following only
Followers − Following = Followers only

If you are searching “followers vs following Instagram” because you want to know which accounts do not follow you back, the group you are looking for is Following only.

03

How to see who you follow that doesn’t follow you back

The logic is simple: compare your Following usernames against your Followers usernames. Any account that appears in Following but not in Followers is a current one-way relationship.

You can check accounts manually when the list is small. With hundreds or thousands of relationships, comparing the complete lists becomes repetitive, which is where an Instagram data export becomes useful.

Instagram lets you request your own follower and following data. Once you have those records, you can compare the full lists instead of checking profiles one at a time. See how to download your Instagram followers and following list if you do not have the files yet.

04

Why Followers and Following totals are not enough

Your profile totals cannot tell you which specific accounts are mutual or one-way. The same account can be included in both totals when you follow each other.

For example, having 1,000 Followers and 1,200 Following does not mean that 200 accounts fail to follow you back. You could have 700 mutual accounts, 500 Following-only accounts and 300 Followers-only accounts. The headline totals alone do not reveal that overlap.

To answer “who do I follow that doesn’t follow me back?”, you need the usernames in both lists, not just the two profile counts.

05

“Doesn’t follow me back” is not the same as “unfollowed me”

A Following-only account tells you the current relationship: you follow that account and it does not follow you in the snapshot you are looking at.

That does not prove the account recently unfollowed you. It may never have followed you in the first place.

To identify an actual follower change, you need two snapshots from the same Instagram profile and compare them over time. See how to find who unfollowed you on Instagram.

Quick answers about Followers vs Following on Instagram

What is the difference between Followers and Following?

Followers are accounts that follow you. Following are accounts you follow. The lists can overlap when you follow each other.

How do I know who I follow that doesn’t follow me back?

Compare your Following list with your Followers list. Accounts that appear in Following but not Followers are the accounts you follow that do not follow you back at that point in time.

Can I work it out from the follower and following counts?

No. Mutual accounts are included in both totals, so the difference between the two numbers does not tell you which accounts are one-way. You need to compare the underlying usernames.

Does “not following me back” mean they unfollowed me?

No. It only describes the current relationship. To identify an unfollow between two dates, compare two follower snapshots from the same profile.
