The short answer
A Following only account is someone you follow, while they do not follow you back in the follower data you are currently looking at.
You → follow them.
They → do not follow you.
Social Janitor uses “Following only” as a clear label for this one-way relationship. The same idea is often described as a non-follower or someone who does not follow you back.
02
Following only is not the same as an unfollower
An account can be Following only even if it has never followed you. A current follower export only tells you what the relationship looks like at that snapshot in time.
To call someone an unfollower, you need evidence that the account appeared in an older Followers list and is missing from a newer one.
If you want to understand that difference in detail, see how to find who unfollowed you on Instagram.
03
How the Following only list is calculated
The list comes from comparing the actual accounts in your Following data with the accounts in your Followers data.
Following − Followers = Following only.
This calculation is based on usernames or account identifiers in the imported data, not just on the total follower and following counts.
If an account appears in both lists, it is Mutual instead. If it appears only in Followers, it belongs to Followers only.
04
A simple example
Imagine your export contains these accounts:
- Following: Alex, Jamie, Morgan, Taylor
- Followers: Jamie, Morgan, Casey
Comparing the lists gives you:
- Following only: Alex, Taylor
- Mutual: Jamie, Morgan
- Followers only: Casey
That is the same relationship logic Social Janitor applies to the follower and following records in your own Instagram export.
06
How should you review a Following only list?
A one-way relationship is not automatically something you should remove. You may intentionally follow creators, businesses, public figures, friends or accounts whose content you simply want to see.
The value of the list is that it gives you a clear place to review those relationships instead of guessing from totals.
- Keep accounts you still want to follow.
- Review unfamiliar or low-value accounts individually.
- Open the Instagram profile before making a decision.
- Avoid treating the list as proof that someone recently unfollowed you.
Social Janitor does not automatically unfollow anyone. Any follow or unfollow action stays on Instagram and remains your decision.
