01
The short answer
Following only means the account is present in your Following data but not in your Followers data for the same imported snapshot.
It describes the current relationship in the imported data. It does not by itself prove that the account used to follow you.
02
How is Following only calculated?
Social Janitor compares the account records in your Followers and Following files.
If an account appears in Following but does not appear in Followers, it is placed in Following only.
- Mutual: the account appears in both Followers and Following.
- Following only: the account appears in Following but not Followers.
- Followers only: the account appears in Followers but not Following.

03
Why doesn't Following only automatically mean someone unfollowed you?
A single snapshot only shows the relationship state at one point in time.
An account may appear in Following only because it never followed you, because it stopped following you earlier, or because the export itself is from a different point in time than you expected.
To show that an account actually disappeared from Followers, you need an older snapshot where that account was present and a newer one where it is missing.
For that workflow, read how to find who unfollowed you on Instagram.
04
Why does snapshot timing matter?
Social Janitor analyzes the records contained in the export you selected. It does not monitor your Instagram account live.
If the export is older, the Following only list reflects that older snapshot rather than your account at this exact moment.
If the numbers or accounts look different from Instagram today, read why your Instagram follower count can differ from your export.
05
How should you review Following only accounts?
Use the list as a cleanup and review tool rather than treating every account as an unfollower.
With Pro, you can search the complete list, open Instagram profiles directly and mark accounts as Keep or Reviewed while you work through the result.
Social Janitor does not automatically unfollow accounts for you. Any action you take on Instagram remains your decision.
06
What if the Following only list looks wrong?
First check that the Followers and Following files came from the same Instagram profile and the same export set.
Also check whether the export was split into multiple follower-related files or whether the snapshot is older than the account state you are comparing it with.
If the import itself looks incomplete, read Instagram data export not showing all followers?.
07
What should you do next?
If your goal is to clean up who you follow, Following only is the most relevant list to review. If your goal is to identify actual historical unfollowers, compare snapshots instead.
