01
The short answer
Imported Instagram files are analyzed locally in your browser. Snapshots and comparisons are stored on your device rather than synchronized to Social Janitor's servers.
Social Janitor separates local follower-analysis data from online account, subscription and billing records.
02
What is stored in IndexedDB?
Social Janitor stores imported snapshots and comparison data in your browser using IndexedDB.
These local snapshots are what allow Social Janitor to compare one Instagram export with another later.
Because the data remains on your device, Social Janitor does not keep a server-side backup of those imported snapshots.
03
What is stored in local storage?
Keep/Reviewed decisions and some interface preferences are stored using local storage in your browser.
This means your cleanup workflow can remain available in the same browser without uploading those choices as part of your Instagram export data.
Clearing site storage can remove snapshots, comparison history, cleanup choices and preferences that exist only on that device.
04
What is stored on Social Janitor's backend?
Online account data is separate from your imported Instagram files.
- Account data: email address, internal user identifier, authentication and session information, account timestamps and free-preview usage.
- Subscription data: plan, billing interval, subscription status, renewal information and related identifiers.
- Support and communication data: messages and information you choose to send.
The number of free-preview list opens and whether the import allowance has been used are also stored with your account so clearing local browser data does not reset the preview allowance.

05
What happens when you create a portable backup?
Pro users can export a portable Social Janitor backup containing locally stored snapshots, Keep/Reviewed decisions and private account notes.
The backup is created in your browser and downloaded to a location you choose. Social Janitor does not receive or store a copy as part of that export process.
The backup is readable JSON and is not encrypted by Social Janitor, so you are responsible for storing it securely.
06
What happens if you change browser or device?
Local snapshots are not automatically synchronized to another browser or device.
Clearing browser data, switching browsers, changing devices or using private browsing may remove or make local snapshot history unavailable.
If you want to move supported local data, a Pro portable backup can be restored while you are signed in to the same Social Janitor account.
07
How do you clear locally stored data?
Use the dashboard's Clear local data control to erase browser-stored snapshots and Keep/Reviewed decisions.
To remove cookies and all other site data as well, use your browser settings.
Clearing local data does not delete your online account, subscription, analytics-consent choice or original Instagram export files stored elsewhere on your device.
Read how to delete your Social Janitor data for the difference between local deletion and a server-side privacy request.
